The Citizen Science Research Group is based at the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT) within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Groningen. Our research on citizen science addresses both the social and technical dimensions of the field. We investigate how citizen science contributes to scientific research across disciplines, with a particular focus on water, environment, and climate.
Our work lies at the intersection of citizen science, science communication, and education. We develop innovative tools, training programmes, and research that strengthen the (inter)national citizen science field. Through these efforts, we aim to enhance public participation in science and generate broader societal benefits.
Key research areas:
The dynamics of establishing and sustaining citizen science projects, public engagement strategies, participant motivations, inclusivity, ethical considerations, and the impacts of these initiatives. Additionally, we examine how citizen science fosters open science, supports sustainable development goals, and integrates into higher education curricula.
